The Healthy City Keynote Panel
Many of the panels discussed the “walkability” of Dallas, and the Healthy City was no exception. Panelists also focused on giving influential people in communities the tools they need to spread public health information.
Ideas for a Healthy Dallas
These ideas were submitted by citizens attending the Festival.
- Make parks more accessible and fun so they can bring people together
- Community reporter workshops
- More use of public transit
- Stop mowing the grass
- Why does our food have so much sugar and chemicals?
- More green parks and walking trails
- School gardens
- Address the desert + grow a community
- More community gardens
- Sponsor free health fairs in public schools 3 or 4 a year. Emphasize high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and clean eating
- More bike trails
- Become a part of slow food
- Affordable healthcare
- Slow food kids
- Stop building golf course—takes away greenery and habitat from animals, flora, and fauna
- Multiple walking bike trails all over Dallas!
- More green space! There is too much concrete in Dallas. Green space encourages community health!
- Tax breaks for restaurants offering organic options
- Safe routes to school to bike/walk
- Fresh food, basic medicine, public transport, local business, ban plastic
- Less highways!
- More parks!
- Get 8 hours of sleep
- Help stop global warming (less cars)
- Help the homeless
- Stop wasting paper
- Stop wasting water
- Affordable healthy grocery stores and gyms in south Dallas and south Oak Cliff—not just north Dallas!
- Fair Park needs to be renovated!
- Access to healthy food everywhere!
- Program to utilize unused food from stores and restaurants. Stop food waste and hunger
- More walkable city!
- Make somebody smile today
- Libraries in rec centers, cultural centers, senior centers
- Promote farm-to-table lifestyles instead of big box grocery stores
- Lessons on how to cook healthy foods on a budget
- Make the healthy city accessible to all
- Promote/fund creative and arts incubators
- Offer tai chi classes at Fair Park
- Diversity is more than skin color—it’s income. Affordable housing is needed
- Wifi, bookstores, sofas and chairs
- Eat a good breakfast
